"Lord, thank you for imagination and creativity.
Please guide me to use, appreciate,
and share them through art."
Art class at Incarnation School begins with the above prayer. It
is also a statement of the philosophy of the school’s art program that
emphasizes both studio experience and art appreciation.
Curriculum
The curriculum provides for the exploration of three main areas of study:
Creating Art – hands on activities, Looking at Art –
seeing and describing art and Living with Art – art awareness.
There is a sequential plan for learning in kindergarten through eighth
grade. The teachers incorporate the activities from several art textbook
series and periodical resources, and the students have the opportunity to
work with a wide variety of media and specialty items.
The Art Room
The art room is a state-of-art facility. It easily accommodates 35
students. Custom built tables allow ample student work and teacher
demonstration space. Long counter tops, both high and low, add more work
area. Three sinks are available for easy clean up. Computers and printers
are provided for an introduction to graphic arts. Adjoining the main room is
a large storage space and kiln room.
We continue to add to our selection of prints and art appreciation
videos. Students learn to see and describe the art of others through a basic
method of art criticism.
Integrating Art
The art department coordinates many activities with other areas of the
school. Classroom and library themes are reinforced through artistic
displays of student work. Special art projects follow social studies, health
fair and Spanish Fair topics. The art department is involved in preparation
for the sacraments. Art and language art teachers often link art and
literature.
Sharing
There are many more opportunities for the viewing and sharing of student
art. Throughout the year selections from all grades are displayed in four
gallery cases in a main hallway. Large bulletin boards on two walls in the
art room are used to display matted and framed students artwork. Student
creations are also displayed in the computer lab, clinic, and several
classrooms.
Nurturing Imagination
A very important goal of the Incarnation Art Department is to offer
students a stress free program, strong in self-satisfaction, self-esteem,
and memorable in terms of accomplishment. Three teachers work to nurture the
students’ God given creativity and imagination, and to guide students in
using, appreciating and sharing art now and in the future. Mrs. Susie
Ellis teaches kindergarten through grade four. Mrs. Pat Lotz teaches
grade five through grade eight.
