Composer of the Month

Camille Saint-Saens

Born:  October 9, 1835

Paris, France

Died:  December 16, 1921

Algiers, Algeria

As a small child, Camille Saint-Saens appeared destined to become another Mozart.  He began playing the piano at the age of two, was composing at three and first performed in public when he was five.  At the age of ten he claimed to be able to play any one of Beethoven's 32 sonatas from memory.  At the age of 18 his First Symphony was performed.  He produced hundreds of works and was greatly admired by composers of his time.  Saint-Saens wrote many different types of music such as piano and violin concertos, symphonic poems, operas and symphonies.

His best known work, Carnival of the Animals, was never intended to be heard in public.  Saint-Saens wrote it to entertain himself and his friends, and forbade its publication in his lifetime.

Camille Saint-Saens was a very intelligent man.  Not only was he a musician but also an amateur scientist, archaeologist, poet and playwright.  Many say because of his many interests he never became the composer he could have become.  He composed and performed until his death.

Most popular works of Saint-Saens:

Carnival of the Animals

Danse Macabre

Symphony No. 3 in C Minor

Musician's Prayer

Dear God, please bless my music

That it might glorify your name,

May using it to serve you

Always be my aim.

Oh Lord, I ask for guidance

In everything I do,

And pray you'll make my music

An instrument for you.    Amen
