SOFTWARE DESCRIPTIONS

Fluent
Reader
Fluent
Reader was added to our software collection during the 2002-03 school year
for use by the Dreams Are Free students to encourage fluent reading. Once students establish their reading
rate by reading passages, they read along with recordings of specific
passages. Students record themselves reading the passages and
monitor their progress at their own rate. According to the National
Reading Panel, repeated and monitored oral reading improves reading
fluency and overall reading achievement. This is the goal of Fluent
Reader and the Dreams Are Free Program.
Odyssey
This school year students in
grades K-8 will be utilizing new software programs from Compass Learning.
This new software is replacing Successmaker. The Odyssey programs are
designed as a supplement to concepts currently being taught in the
classroom. Teachers will be able to choose objectives for their students
to practice that will reinforce and enrich their classroom curriculum. The
program also includes custom assessment tools based on local and state
standards that offer feedback on student progress. Key aspects of the
program include the following:
*Compass Learning Odyssey’s standards-based
curriculum helps students develop a foundation for literacy and numeracy,
and strengthen their reading, language arts, math, social studies,
science, and English language skills and knowledge.
*The lessons are self-paced and engage students
through interactive, project-based activities that promote exploration,
problem solving, reflection, and real-world connections.
*A variety of learning and instructional approaches
support multiple learning styles, intelligences, and levels of student
achievement.
*Integrated assessment and management tools
offer students immediate feedback and guidance and allow teachers to
assess and monitor student progress in real time.
*Curriculum and assessment promote
differentiated instruction and provide enhanced opportunities for students
who need remediation or enrichment.
By engaging students through challenging,
project-based activities and providing teachers with the data they need to
support student achievement, Compass Learning ensures that students
experience academic success.
Odyssey
will be available to the students on their classroom computers, in the
computer lab, and on both of our wireless laptop carts.
Bernie's Typing Travels
Bernie’s Typing Travels is a “new key
learning” keyboarding software program for elementary students. This
highly interactive, 32-bit program is fun, animated, includes skill
building, and contains added exposure to history because of the time
travel aspect of the software. Hand animation and games are also included.
Bernie’s Typing Travels is appropriate for grades 3-5, and can be used
as a standalone in a 9- to 12-week course or as a module within the
curriculum. With an emphasis on spelling and spelling activities, the
keyboarding software program enables teachers to add their own spelling
list through the teacher’s utility feature.
Roller Typing
Speedblade down roadways at record speeds, do
a 720 in a half pipe, or dodge obstacles on sidewalks as quick as you can.
Learn and practice your typing skills through 5 unique 3D animated in-line
skating events. Through 20 levels of letters, numbers and punctuation
symbols, students will strive to their best in hopes of making it to Star
Row or Z-Hall of Fame. Roller Typing requires students to learn proper
fingering techniques as well as develop speed and rhythm in both untimed
and timed situations.

Incarnation, An Award
Winning School!
Incarnation
Catholic School was named as one of the 12 recipients of the "Year
2000 Catholic Schools for Tomorrow" award by "Today's Catholic
Teacher" magazine. This national award goes to schools
that demonstrate innovations in technology and was presented at the
National Catholic Education Association Convention in Baltimore, Maryland.
A Long History of
Leading in Technology!
Incarnation School, long a leader in the
use of technology, brought the vision of integrating technology into the
curriculum in the early 90's thus initiating a Technology 2000 plan. Today,
Incarnation has a networked computer lab, computers in all classrooms,
computer centers with 6 stations in K - 5 classrooms, as well as the science
and math labs. lnternet access is available to all networked computers and
the teachers have developed various units of study using Internet sites to
enhance learning.
Classroom teachers, immersed in using
technology with their students, are the key to a successful program.
Incarnation's technology plan stresses staff development and technology
support for their teachers. One-hundred percent of the faculty is computer
literate and involve the use of technology
in their classrooms on a regular basis. The faculty has collectively earned
over 3500 in-service hours in the past 5 years! All teachers participate in
6 hours of on campus in service and attend a minimum of one technology
workshop or conference annually. A technology component is included as one
of the yearly goals in each teachers professional growth plan.
Incarnation's vision of integrating
technology into the curriculum as an enhancement to student learning and a
source of effective skills for the 2lst century has come to fruition.
Evidence of this can be found in every subject, in every classroom. The
methodology in Grades K-5 has changed from large group instruction to small
groups working in a learning center environment, which includes computer
centers. The teacher's role has changed dramatically from lecturer to guide
and facilitator of learning. Extensive courseware covering a full year of
objectives is used in all math, reading, and writing classes.
Whether it is creating a multimedia
presentation or using courseware for instruction, technology is clearly
infused into every part of the learning experience at lncarnation. Principal
Sister Monica Paul Fraser, O.P. states, "To say that technology has
impacted on every aspect of the curriculum would not be an exaggeration. Our
school is a much better and happier place due to technology."
