Catholic Classical Liberal Arts Education, Pre-Kindergarten - Grade 8
We educate our students in a way that combines Catholic faith with academic excellence to have students become more aware of the transcendent realities of Truth, Beauty and Goodness. Our Catholic identity is woven through the school culture, curriculum, content, and pedagogy. The curriculum is content-rich while building on the previous year’s knowledge for students to expand their thinking on traditional teachings with an emphasis on the development of Catholic values and teachings.
History, Geography and Literature is taught chronologically by historical periods of time, aligned to the story of Salvation History and the life of the Church. We teach through stories, narratives, fables, novels, poetry, primary sources, music, arts, and the sciences as history comes alive for our students. There is a focus on the mastery of language from alphabet and phonics, to parts of speech, persuasive speech and debate. Students are taught to write clearly and speak eloquently. Students are required to clarify their thoughts in writing in all subject areas.
ICS has entered into a three-year adoption of the Catholic classical liberal arts approach. We will begin with taking the time to learn and plan together. We will then move into refining our pedagogy and focus on implementation.
The curriculum is divided into the following developmental and historical segments:
Kindergarten: The Cradle of Civilization Year
1st Grade: The Greek Year
2nd Grade: The Roman Year
3rd Grade: The Medieval Year
4th Grade: The Modern Year
5th Grade: The American Year
6th Grade: The Ancient Year
7th Grade: The Christendom Year
8th Grade: The New World Year
Our classrooms are filled with students who love to learn, have a sense of wonder, and are self-motivated to apply their knowledge in abstract ways. See the below video and documents for more information on the Catholic liberal education.
